Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a breakthrough technology that has the potential to revolutionize a doctor's ability to:
- diagnose cancer and differentiate between benign and malignant tumors
- determine if cardiac tissue is alive and able to benefit from bypass surgery
- examine the human brain with respect to a number of neurological and psychiatric disorders, including stroke, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, and other conditions
PET is different from other imaging modalities because PET looks within cells to determine how they are currently functioning. This sets PET apart from CT scans or MRI scans, which provide insight primarily into anatomy.
PET is also different because it:
- shows all of the organ systems of the body with one image
- often diagnoses disease before it shows up in other tests
- shows the progress of disease and how the body responds to treatment
- replaces multiple tests with a single exam
As a result, PET can guide many medical decisions and reduce costs through the elimination of unnecessary surgeries, tests, and other procedures.
